In the bustling streets of India, a familiar sight is about to get a fresh makeover.
The Maruti Alto 800, a car that has been the first choice for millions of Indian families, is set to enter a new era with its 2024 model.
This isn’t just a facelift; it’s a reimagining of what India’s favorite small car can be in an age of rapid technological advancement and changing consumer expectations.
The Maruti Alto has been a staple on Indian roads since its introduction in 2000. Over the years, it has become synonymous with reliability, affordability, and fuel efficiency.
The 2024 model aims to build on this legacy while bringing the Alto 800 firmly into the modern age.
“We’ve listened to our customers,” says Rajesh Sharma, Chief Product Designer at Maruti Suzuki. “They love the Alto, but they also want more.
More features, more comfort, more safety. With the 2024 Alto 800, we’re delivering on all fronts.”
The new Alto 800 retains its compact dimensions, crucial for navigating India’s crowded urban landscapes. However, the design team has worked magic within these constraints.
The front grille is now more pronounced, giving the car a wider, more confident stance. LED daytime running lights, a first for the Alto 800, add a touch of premium feel to the front fascia.
The side profile sees subtle changes, with more pronounced character lines that run the length of the car, adding a sense of motion even when stationary.
At the rear, redesigned taillights and a slightly reshaped bumper complete the modern look.
Color options have been expanded, with the introduction of two new shades: Mystic Teal and Rustic Bronze, alongside the classic options that Alto lovers have come to appreciate over the years.
Step inside the 2024 Alto 800, and you’ll immediately notice the difference. The dashboard has been completely redesigned, with a focus on ergonomics and a more upmarket feel.
A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system takes center stage, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity – a first in this segment.
The seats have been redesigned for better comfort on long journeys, with improved cushioning and lumbar support.
Rear seat passengers haven’t been forgotten either, with slightly increased legroom thanks to clever packaging.
“We wanted to create an interior that punches above its weight,” explains Anita Desai, Interior Design Lead. “Every surface, every button has been thought through to maximize both functionality and aesthetic appeal.”
The heart of the new Alto 800 is its refined 796cc, three-cylinder petrol engine. While the displacement remains the same, Maruti’s engineers have worked tirelessly to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
The engine now produces 49 PS of power and 69 Nm of torque – a slight increase from the previous model. But the real story is in the fuel efficiency.
Maruti claims a stunning 22.05 kmpl for the petrol variant, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in India.
For the environmentally conscious and budget-minded consumer, a CNG variant is also available, offering an impressive 31.59 km/kg efficiency.
A 5-speed manual transmission comes standard, but the big news is the introduction of an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) option in the higher trims, a first for the Alto 800.
Safety has been a key focus area for the 2024 Alto 800.
The car now comes with dual front airbags as standard across all variants, along with ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.
The body structure has been reinforced to better absorb and distribute impact forces in the event of a collision.
Higher trims offer additional safety features like a reverse camera, day/night IRVM, and speed alert system.
“Safety isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity,” states Vikram Mehta, Head of Safety Engineering at Maruti Suzuki. “With the new Alto 800, we’re setting new benchmarks for safety in the small car segment.”
The 2024 Alto 800 is stepping up its game in terms of technology. The aforementioned 7-inch touchscreen isn’t just for show. It’s the hub for a host of smart features including:
- Smartphone connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Voice recognition for hands-free control
- Rear parking camera display
- Turn-by-turn navigation
Higher trims also offer a digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, and keyless entry with push-button start – features that were once the domain of much more expensive cars.
The new Alto 800 will be available in four variants:
- Std (O) – The base model, perfect for the budget-conscious buyer
- LXi – Adding a few more comfort features
- VXi – The mid-range option with a good balance of features and affordability
- VXi+ – The top-end variant with all the bells and whistles
Pricing is expected to start from Rs. 3.25 lakh for the base model, going up to Rs. 4.95 lakh for the top-end variant (ex-showroom prices).
This represents a slight increase from the current model, but Maruti is confident that the added features and improvements justify the price bump.
The small car segment in India is fiercely competitive, with players like the Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-GO vying for market share. However, Maruti Suzuki is confident that the new Alto 800 has what it takes to maintain its position at the top.
“We’re not just competing on price,” asserts Priya Nair, Marketing Director at Maruti Suzuki. “We’re offering a complete package – a car that’s efficient, safe, feature-rich, and backed by Maruti’s legendary service network. That’s a combination that’s hard to beat.”
In an age of increasing environmental awareness, Maruti hasn’t forgotten its responsibilities. The new Alto 800 is fully compliant with BS6 Phase II emission norms.
The company has also made strides in making the production process more sustainable, with increased use of recycled materials and a reduction in water and energy consumption during manufacturing.
The launch of the new Alto 800 is more than just a new car hitting the market. It’s a statement of intent from Maruti Suzuki, showcasing their ability to evolve a beloved product while staying true to its core values.
Industry analysts are watching closely. “The Alto 800 has always been a bellwether for the Indian auto industry,” notes automotive journalist Ravi Desai.
“Its success or failure can give us insights into consumer preferences and the overall health of the small car market in India.”
For Maruti, the stakes are high. The Alto has been a consistent bestseller, and the company is banking on this new version to continue that trend.
But more than that, the 2024 Alto 800 is Maruti’s answer to the question: What does the future of affordable mobility look like in India?
While the car has yet to hit the streets in large numbers, early test drives and showroom visits have generated buzz among potential buyers.
Amit Patel, a 28-year-old software engineer from Pune, was impressed during his showroom visit. “I’ve always seen the Alto as a no-frills car.
But this new version? It’s got features I didn’t expect in this segment. The touchscreen and the overall interior quality really stood out to me.”
Sneha Gupta, a working mother from Delhi, appreciated the safety features. “Safety is my top priority, especially when I’m driving with my kids. The fact that even the base model comes with dual airbags gives me peace of mind.”

As it rolls out to showrooms across India, the new Alto 800 carries with it the hopes of Maruti Suzuki and the expectations of millions of potential buyers.
